What is it?
A Blueprint for Happiness is your personal map to guide you towards happiness in your career and personal aspirations.
Who can use it?
Anyone and everyone can use it!
When should I use it?
You can do this exercise anytime in your career journey, especially if you’re feeling lost in your career or burnout at work.
Why does it work?
It’s a tool that takes into account your fundamental needs and what’s most important to you. The questions will help you self-reflect and draw you out of your current situation to reexamine what makes you happy.
How does it work?
Directions.
Step 1. Take a look at this list of The 9 Most Common Needs at Work below. (Please note this is not an exhaustive list). Consider the following questions.
Step 2. Which of these needs resonates with you most? Why?
Step 3. Which of these needs that, if missing, would cause you the most stress or unpleasant feelings? Why?
Step 4. Think of the type of people you want to work with. What needs do they value?
Step 5. What are some ways/strategies you can get these needs met? For example, autonomy can be met through flexible work arrangements and high standards can be met through a culture of accountability.
Step 6. Consider: Does your current job, team, manager, or company culture foster these needs?
If yes, you’re most likely happy with your current situation.
If not, what are some things you would need to request from your manager to get your needs met at work?
If you’re looking for a new job, what questions can you ask the interview team and the hiring manager to give you a better understanding of if the job/team/manager/company culture will match your needs?
